    The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

A total of eight musicians come together for this closing song, a tune which conjures images of a café terrace in the city which saw the birth of raï music. The instruments, the vocals which beat to the rhythm of Arab-Andalusian music, rising irresistibly with the light of day. The spirit of Oranian tolerance is recognized globally. This port on the Mediterranean basin is a crossroads of cultures which is reputed for its ability to erase origins. Here, there is room for all faiths. The trials and tribulations of the ages have catalyzed a dialogue between civilizations. This is the focal point for Sultan, an open composition in a pluri-millennium era which is capable of surrounding itself with different sensitivities in order to retrace humanity’s voyage and unite the rhythms of their languages.
