The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

about

Djolof is a kingdom. And “Djolof Blues” is the history of Senegal played to a blues you could call national. Be it on the sabars or on traditional Senegalese percussions and drums, Cheikh Ana Ndiaye and Paco Sery quickly stamp an imposing rhythm. Senegalese blues is solid, inebriating, almost military. It’s the “guardian the house,” it’s the kind that’s played at ceremonies and which announces the arrival of a personality. Brass players Mayot and Sarduy are also echo chambers for the history of West African kingdoms. When we speak in Djolof, we’re talking about the kingdom which existed before western domination and slavery. The keyboard scale appears to squash the rhythm before rebounding on the piano as if we were in a jazz club. The evocation glides between the “before” and the “after”, reminding us of the mixture meshed into the encounter, the piano detaching the melody. The return of the rhythm beats out like the original, while the effervescence and the fusion of the keyboards/piano echoes out the essence of life.
