    The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

The song starts with a drum roll. Enter birds chirping, backed by the flute, and we divine that this Malian blues tune is saluting Mother Nature. To the rhythms of the sabars or Khinn, the trumpet evokes a strange dance, that of animals moving forward, sometimes interrupted by a cry. The flute is still there, that played by multi-instrumentalist Draman Dembele. The race is only beginning. For the hunters’ community, this is all about completing a mission. Percussions and piano rely on the spiritual ternary rhythm and its five-beat acceleration. The alliance between Man and Animal depends on an overriding balance of rituals. The respect of the former dictates the survival of the latter. The chants conjure human unity and the brass section its strength. Let us pause and delve on the inspiration drawn from the legendary Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride brotherhood and Sufi movement. The double exile, enforced by the European colonization of the end of the 19th century, far from defeating Bamba, forged his mystical legend. It inspired one of his descendants, Ibrahima Fall, who founded the Baye Fall movement and its religious chants. These are guided by rhythms that mirror the songs of proud and intrepid Wolof warriors, born out of the ancient kingdoms of Senegal, Gambia and the south of Mauritania
