The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

about

The vocals are those of Alune Wade and Mounir Troudi. Their duo is a gripping foundation, soft, melancholic. The clarinet picks up on the bass, it builds on the methodical rhythm created by Cyril Atef. This is a composition Wade began two or three years ago and was never able to complete. One day, he understood that, unconsciously, it was destined to be a melody dedicated to his parents. They had departed one after the other, in an interval of three months, after 50 years of a shared life. They are a testimony to the power of souls meeting and never parting. The musician son pays homage to the father, a conductor in Senegal’s national orchestra and his mother, the guardian of the family. The song combines jazz improvisation with Balkan sounds, delegating to the formidable Ismail Lumanovski and his clarinet the privilege of the unforgettable.
