The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

about

Like the drums, percussions beat out the desert pulse, Saharan plains that stretch out beyond the horizon, while the bass installs the atmosphere of nomadic chants. The trumpet and baritone saxophone precede the voice of Mauritanian singer Noura Mint Seymali. The North-South musical axis harks back to the first Conquistadors, the Moors. This song studies the African youth who must face its realities, scrutinizes the world they live in and must try not to swim against the tide. The label might appear too broad, designing all the youth of the continent but Wade discerns the same objectives, because they are faced with the same destiny. The young Nigerian can complain about the same obstacles as the young South African, Moroccan and Senegalese : unemployment, politics, independence… and dependence.
