The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

about

Those who are in love will take the path of the dunes. Voices float up, first that of the Tunisian singer Mounir Troudi, then Alune Wade’s, who joins him in the second part. The odyssey of the Sultan who, like the Queen of Sabah, crisscrossed the continent, starts in a tent. We feel the heat of the desert, and we imagine the procession, the perfumes, the rites. Through the fingers of Harold Lopez Nussa, the piano sounds ripple along, melodious, then it fixes on to the solid drum rhythms of Paco Sery. The march becomes triumphant, like the plated chords of Ducheman on the piano which suddenly thrusts forward. This is a celebration of dance, of festivity, passing from one continent to the next. Musicians in harmony, listening to each other, call-and-responses, delivering messages in which the subtle composition transforms itself, both in time and space.
