The list of collaborations Alune Wade enjoyed over the decades read like a Who’s Who from the worlds of jazz and crossover music: Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Oumou Sangare, Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N’Dour, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Lokua Kanza, Blick Bassy, Fatoumata Diawara… the list goes on. His inspirations – Weather Report, Charlie Parker, Salif Keita, to name but a few – reflect musical choices he made. Many were distilled in explorations with the aptly named University of Gnawa, an ‘institution’ Alune co-founded with the mesmeric Aziz Sahmaoui – the virtuoso singer and sinter player, formerly of L’Orchestre National de Barbès, also makes an appearance in Sultan.

about

The bass and brass section introduces listeners into modern Ethiopian music. The symbol is a powerful reminder of the era of Emperor Haile Selassie and of the only African nation which was never colonized. With Josch Dutsch on the trumpet and Daniel Blake on baritone sax, the encounter shifts towards a New York-inspired jazz, while the groove is resolutely African. On top of the English and French lyrics, Alune Wade adds the voice of rapper PPS the Writah. The Senegalese poet vindicates his attachment to his country’s millennia-old legends and his talent has stamped Dakarois hip hop on the world map. The words beat a rhythm in Wolof and its intrinsic rhythm, before Christian Sands releases a deluge of piano notes, echoing the unleashed percussions delivered by Cyril Atef. The amplification is explosive and transcends all borders.
